Let’s face it, Stripe is awesome at making payments easy.  You can integrate with their API in a matter of minutes and collecting money instantly.  The best part is that you don’t have any monthly fees to worry about.  You only pay when you get paid.  The only downside to Stripe is that it is hard to send customized notifications to your customer about their payment.  Unless you’re the developer behind the Stripe integration, your options are limited.

With Formstack Documents you can automatically send payment receipts, thank you letters, and more by using Stripe payment information.  Simply setup templates in Formstack Documents and then you can integrate Stripe using Zapier to create your documents when you receive a new customer or a new payment.

In this example, we’re going to show you how to send a customized receipt to your customers when you receive a payment from them.  Our first step is to setup the template in Formstack Documents.  We’re going to use the online builder to create this template and we’ll add all of our merge tags where we want the payment information to go.  Here’s what our template looks like:

Once you have the template setup, let’s jump over to the Delivery tab to make sure that our customer receives this receipt.  We’ll need to update the “To” field to map to the {$email} merge field that we are using on our receipt.

The next step is to setup the Zap in Zapier that will automatically send our Stripe payment information to our document in Formstack Documents.  Go ahead and login to your Zapier account and create a new Zap connecting Stripe (New Payment) with Formstack Documents (Create Document Merge) and make sure the accounts are active


Zapier will automatically load a list of your Formstack Documents documents for you to pick from.  When you select your Receipt document that you created, it will automatically load a list of the merge fields that you have in the document.  You will need to “match” those fields with the corresponding Stripe fields so the data is sent properly to Formstack Documents.


Now it’s time to test!  Go ahead and use the Test functionality that Zapier provides at the bottom of the Zap setup.  You might have to add a fake payment in Stripe first, but here’s what our test looks like:

That’s it!  Now whenever you receive a payment to your Stripe account, Formstack Documents will automatically generate a receipt and email it to your customer.  With our other Delivery Options, you could archive that receipt or even mail it to the customer with Lob.  Can you think of other ways you can use Formstack Documents in your business?
