Text Alignment in Table

I'm trying to have different lines of text inside a td element have different alignments. In Editor Mode it looks fine:

Once it's merged however, the left alignment is ignored and everything is centered:

Here is the code :

<table border="0" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" style="width:100%;">
    <tbody>
        <tr>
            <td style="background-color: rgb(180, 199, 231); text-align: center;"><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size:12px; text-align:center;"><strong>Centered Text</strong></span>

            <div style="text-align: left; font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size:12px;">This is left aligned text. This is left aligned text. This is left aligned text. This is left aligned text. This is left aligned text. This is left aligned text. This is left aligned text. This is left aligned text. This is left aligned text. This is left aligned text. This is left aligned text.<br />
            <br />
            <strong>More Left Aligned Text:</strong> This is more left aligned text. This is more left aligned text. This is more left aligned text. This is more left aligned text. This is more left aligned text.</div>
            </td>
        </tr>
    </tbody>
</table>

Am I doing something wrong, or is something just going awry during the merging process that causes everything to inherit the alignment of the td object?
